Overview Stressing the relationship between tsarism's service-state ethos and its utilization of subjects, this study argues that economic and political, rather than judicial or penological, factors primarily conditioned Siberian exile's growth and development. He teaches courses on Imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, the Western World, and theory and methodology at the University of Queensland, Australia, and has published articles and book chapters on Siberian exile and other topics.
